Frequently asked questions
What people ask before they hand a draft to a verification tool.
What does Citation Check actually check?
We check whether the source you cited says what you claim it says. That's a narrower question than whether the claim is true in the world, and it's the one we can answer with evidence.
What does "not backed" mean?
It means we couldn't find support for that claim in the source it points at. It doesn't mean the claim is false. The claim might be true and cited to the wrong page, or the source might be behind a paywall we couldn't read.
Do you use AI? Isn't that the problem?
Yes, and we say so plainly. The problem we work on is unsourced information, not AI. We use AI to go and find the evidence, then we show you the source text so you never have to take the model's word for it.
How is this different from a plagiarism checker?
A plagiarism checker asks whether your text matches someone else's. We ask whether your sources hold up. You can write something entirely original and still cite a paper that doesn't say what you think it says.
How is this different from a citation generator?
A generator formats a reference. It doesn't know whether the source supports your sentence. We read the source and show you the wording that does or doesn't back you up.
What sources do you check against?
Live web & news, OpenAlex, Europe PMC, Crossref, arXiv, Retraction Watch. Which ones we use depends on what the claim needs.
Will you catch a retracted paper?
Yes. Retracted papers get flagged automatically, which matters because a retracted study looks completely normal sitting in a reference list.
What happens to my document?
People paste unpublished work into this tool, and we treat that as the trust it is. The security page describes what we do with your text and what we haven't built yet, without rounding anything up.
Is it free?
You get 5 free scans without an account. Paid plans aren't announced yet, and we'd rather say that than put a number here we might change.
Can I trust the result without checking it myself?
You don't have to trust us. Every supported claim comes with the source wording attached, so the check is yours to repeat in seconds rather than hours.
